NC Medicaid Family Planning Waiver

Free reproductive health services for
men and women in North Carolina.
The NC Medicaid Family Planning Waiver makes free family planning
services available to eligible men and women in North Carolina.
The program began in October, 2005 to help reduce unplanned
pregnancies and improve the well-being of children and families
in North Carolina.
This is a program that is available
to North Carolina residents who do not qualify for other
Medicaid benefits. The Medicaid Family Planning
Program is limited to services related to family planning
such as:
- annual family planning exams
- most types of birth control
- testing for pregnancy
- testing for sexually transmitted infections
- assistance in planning when to have a baby
- voluntary sterilization
Who is eligible?
Women (ages 19 to 55) and men (ages 19 to 60) who are:
- residents of North Carolina
- U.S. citizens or qualified aliens
- persons with income at or below 185% of the federal poverty
level
Who can enroll as a provider of the family planning
services?
Provider participation in the program is open to
all Medicaid enrolled providers whose licensure and accreditations
allows them to provide family planning services. This includes:
- physicians
- nurse practitioners
- local health departments
- federally qualified health centers
- rural health clinics
- family planning agencies
- birthing centers
- nurse midwives
There are no additional enrollment requirements for Medicaid
providers who are currently enrolled to provide family planning
services.

If you have clients who may be eligible for, you
can
download
an application ( Spanish
version). The waiver uses the same application
as Health Check (Medicaid) and NC Health Choice for Children
programs for free or low cost health insurance for children
and teens. Order applications in large quantities.
